A Living Heritage of Earth and Fire

Zarrinfam(lusterware)one of the most important achievements of Persian ceramic art. It is a form of craftsmanship shaped at the intersection of technical knowledge, historical experience, and artistic expression. Developed through centuries of experimentation, observation, and oral transmission in ceramic workshops across Persia, Zarrinfam(lusterware) is now recognized as one of the most complex and mysterious glazing techniques in the history of art.

The Heritage of Persian Potters

Zarrinfam (lusterware) is not merely a decorative technique, but a precise system of knowledge involving materials, kiln processes, and time. This knowledge was passed down orally from generation to generation and was rarely written down. As traditional centers of pottery declined and master artisans disappeared, much of this knowledge was lost, and Zarrinfam(lusterware) became a forgotten art for centuries.

Reviving an Ancient Knowledge

Through research into historical texts, close study of museum collections, and extensive practical experimentation, Hamed and Mohammad Tavassolian succeeded in identifying and fully reviving the Zarrinfam (lusterware) technique. Their approach is grounded in a commitment to traditional Persian methods and the careful reconstruction of historical processes—without simplification or modern substitution—allowing the authentic quality of Zarrinfam(lusterware) to be reproduced.

Within the Context of Persian Art History

Around seven hundred years ago, during the Ilkhanid period, knowledge of Zarrinfam (lusterware) was held by a small number of specialized families. The main centers of this art emerged in cities such as Kashan, Ray, Gorgan, Saveh, and Natanz. Notably, works by the Abi Taher family of Kashan from this period are now preserved in major international museums, including the British Museum, the Louvre, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Manufacturing Process

Zarin-fam ceramics are created through a three-stage firing process in a kiln. The third stage, carried out under reducing conditions with precise control of temperature and smoke, is when the lustrous Zarrinfam(lusterware) glaze forms. This stage is the most delicate part of the process and is considered the key to the art’s secret.

The Nature of the Zarrinfam Glaze

Despite its golden appearance, no gold is ever used in the creation of the Zarrinfam(lusterware) glaze. Its final shine results from an extremely thin layer of copper and silver nanoparticles formed on the surface of the glaze. This layer develops only under specific kiln conditions and within a precise, limited timeframe. The effect is a combination of exact chemical reactions and the artisan’s practical expertise.

Zarrinfam Today

Today، Zarrinfam(lusterware) is not merely a reconstruction of the past, but a conscious continuation of an artistic tradition. Its practice aims to preserve historical authenticity, honor the heritage of Persian potters, and present this art in a contemporary and global context—ensuring that Zarrinfam(lusterware) remains a living part of Persia’s art history.
